Laurie Hood

Laurie Hardwick Hood
Laurie Hardwick Hood and her two brothers were students at ACDS in the 1970’s and 80’s.  Mrs. Hood, then Ms. Hardwick, was honored as the first “Ms. ACDS”. Since graduating from Country Day, she has embarked upon an adventure to provide homes and shelter to thousands of animals, adopting over 13,000, abandoned, lost or abused animals ranging from family pets to farm animals.  With the help of her family and friends for funding, as a volunteer base and board members, she founded the Alaqua Animal Refuge in 2007 in Walton County, Florida.  On average, you will find about 250 animals at the refuge and with the growing interest from both animals and the community, the Hood family has plans to expand the refuge to 100 acres and will become a tourist destination, expand into a wildlife sanctuary, and family educational center.  Laurie Hood has been awarded the George H.W. Bush Point of Light Award; she is the district leader for the Humane Society of the U.S. (which addresses legislative issues); she represents Florida on lobby days in Washington; and she was recognized as a local hero at the Red, White and Blue hero recognition in Destin and presented with a key to the city.  Alexandria Country Day School is very proud to have Mrs. Hood and her siblings as members of the ACDS legacy and wish her and her family well.
